This course is open to all students grades 10-12 who want to learn more about the technical and artistic aspects of filmmaking. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the history of film, from the earliest moving pictures and silent films, to the special effects-laden Hollywood blockbusters of contemporary cinema. We will also learn what it takes to create engaging narratives in the many genres of film that exist, and how one can go beyond dialogue and text to tell a story. Students will develop their understanding of film as an artistic medium that goes beyond simple entertainment by watching a selection of films and analysing them/breaking them down from a multitude of perspectives. This course will help develop fundamental skills and techniques needed to create films, such as shot composition, movement, lighting, sound, and acting. Students will create a short film as a culminating project for this course and should be ready to participate in the filming process and have their films shown to others in the class.
